Standard III
Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Standard three allows the teacher to show students and colleagues how current methods can be transferred to updated technologies. Further, it requires that teachers collaborate, communicate, and model the effective use of such tools with others, including students, parents and colleagues. As instructors it is important that we can do all of the above in order to have students who are prepared for the "real world" of college or career. These are the tools that our students will be expected to have proficiency in once they enter college or the workplace. Teachers must address these skills so that students can use 21st Century tools upon graduation.
I used my knowledge of the ADDIE model to create a course for teachers using Google Sites. This course site teachers instructors how they can create more effective instructional materials by adding relevant images and putting them in PDF format for printing. I felt that this was a relevant topic because of the research that I have read by Richard Mayer like The Promise of Multimedia Learning. From this research, I learned that images and text and their placement are important and can affect student learning. I wanted to share this information in my Google Site course. This artifact shows that I have met the standard by communicating relevant information using digital media, and I am modeling the effective use of such media to support learning.
As part of my flipped classroom course, I developed an online gradebook. An online gradebook could allow a teacher to share information about a student's progress with parents, administrators, or other colleagues. Having the information available online allows it to be accessed from many locations and shared easily. It also makes collaboration and decision making easier if the data is needed for planning purposes. This artifact meets the standard by demonstrating fluency in technology systems, and it could be used to communicate relevant information to others.
Teacher Tech Resources is a blog that I created to share information with my colleagues at work. I was constantly receiving the same questions, and I decided it would be easier to have all of the information in one place. When I present information at faculty meetings, I place relevant links and documents on the blog as well. This allows me to share information and model the effective use of technology to my colleagues. Since I shared the blog with them, at least one other teacher has begun using Weebly to provide information to parents! This artifact displays how I have modeled effective use of current technologies, demonstrated knowledge of technology systems and applied them to new situations, and communicated relevant information using digital tools.
I used ThingLink as a tool for my flipped classroom course. Using this tool, students were able to locate relevant sources about the real person that a fictitious character was based on. Students could then evaluate and use the sources to learn more about this person. As a teacher, I could use this in other ways as well. For example, if I wanted to check how well they could evaluate a resource, I could also include sites that were poorly designed and have students choose only the best sites. This artifact meets the standard because it models for students a way that they could present their own findings in an interactive way.
Artifacts
- Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
- Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success
- Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats.
- Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.

Future Learning Goals
For the future, I hope to learn ways that I can help teachers flip their instruction to provide content that can be easily shared with students and parents from home. This will allow parents to be more connected to the learning process and enable them to help their children. I want to learn how to be more effective in the professional development I provide to my colleagues. While that is part of my job, I don't want to do only what is required. I want to find things that work and will cause more implementation to occur. I am also interested in learning about other ways of communicating with my students and parents. Currently I use Remind, but I find that few parents want to take the time to sign up. I am experimenting with digitizing some of the informational letters I send home (see Standard V), and I would like to learn more effective ways to do this.
